Professor Mittal is a robotic and laparoscopic gallbladder, hernia, liver and pancreatic surgeon specializing in gallstones, hernias, liver tumours and pancreatic cancer. Prof Mittal is one of the founding members of the Australian Pancreatic Centre based at Royal North Shore Hospital which is dedicated to the care of pancreatic cancer patients. He is the Surgical Lead for the quality improvement NSQIP program at Royal North Shore Hospital which aims to reduced surgical complications. Prof Mittal is also the head of GIT surgery at the Mater Hospital in Sydney and the Head of Discipline of Surgery at the Mater Clinical School for the University of Notre Dame.
Prof Mittal is dedicated to his clinical work with a view to provide the best care to his patients. He is accredited to practice at Royal North Shore Hospital, North Shore Private Hospital, Mater Hospital and Ryde Hospital. Prof Mittal is also an Adjunct Professor of Surgery at Notre Dame University and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, and has previously served as the Director of Surgical Skills Training at the University of Sydney.
His surgical practice is informed by the latest research in his field, as is evidenced by his accomplishments in research, including the Sir Edward Hughes Memorial Clinical Research Prize in Surgery (2008), the Best Paper Prize awarded by the Australian and New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Association (2008), the Young Investigator Award as given by the Surgical Research Society of Australasia (awarded to him two years in a row, 2007 and 2008), and the Sir Louis Barnett Prize from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (2008).
Along with his clinical work, Prof Mittal is actively involved in surgical research and training. He has published extensively and he is a regular speaker at international meetings and editorial boards related to pancreatic research. He is also a reviewer of the British Journal of Surgery, BMC Gastroenterology, the International Journal of Genomics, the Journal of the Pancreas, the Journal of Surgical Research, and the World Journal of Surgery.
